like a pelican on the wilderness [ towards the north : act 1.2 ]

like a pelican in the wilderness was commissioned by the Centre for performance Research, for presentation within the international theatre festival and conference 'Restless Gravity', Aberystwyth, October 2000.

The resulting work took the form of a performance presentation and ensemble work, within the live construction and development of a specific ambient event.

As both a demonstration and resonant performance work ...like a pelican in the wilderness... proposed the evocation and experience of a loaded and absent performance event through emersion within a performance ambient constructed and evolved by the structured manipulation of the available documentation.

Video and sound recordings of the absent event were layered and mixed with statements of intent, descriptions of proposed and commissioned actions, and any additional material the performers would have introduced.

Within a small darkened room containing four microphones, two video projections and an array of sound equipment, the informal gathering of spectators and performers generated and experienced both the meaning and intention of an absent incident, within the actuality of this unique ambient location, through the direct presentation of selected traces, opinions, and personal explanations.
